Matt Green was born and lived in Ilkeston until 2001 when he was accepted onto the BA HONS Directing course at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in London. He made good use of his time at drama school by directing ten plays as well as assisting on many more.
From the very inception of Sustained Magic, Matt has directed three of the signature Pub Crawl productions as well as writing and directing the “sell out” promenade story telling “Girl in The Window” and “Ghost walks”. On top of the productions, Sustained Magic has also been carrying out workshops with the Museum in Ilkeston.
Along side the artistic work of the company he has also been working on the planning and development of future projects which includes the securing of a rehearsal space and venue. In 2008, Sustained Magic hope to take be working in their new space producing various projects for young people, community as well as the important professional work.
Before Sustained Magic was created and to this day, Matt has been freelancing with the Nottingham Theatre Royals’ “Royal Company”. He was assistant director on “The Government Inspector”, “Oliver Twist” and in 2005 took the full role of director on “The Crucible” which was a joint show between The Royal Company and Nottingham Arts Theatre. In the summer of 2005 matt also directed a site specific production of Tony Harrison’s “The Mysteries” performed at Nottingham Castle. In 2006 Matt assisted on the production of “101 Dalmatians” as well as directing first a rehearsed reading of Sarah Kane’s “4:48 Psychosis” and then a full production in 2007 as part of the Derby Theatre Festival. In 2008 Matt will be once again working with the Royal Company on its next major project “Robin of Sherwood” adapted from Michael Morpurgos book of the same name.
Matt has been working with various youth and young peoples groups on a variety of theatre projects over the past three years. As Part Time Worker in Charge for Front of House Youth Theatre, a youth project run by Derby City Council, he directed a promenade performance of “Alice in Wonderland”, a radio play written by some of the young people and in February 2006 a piece of new writing which had been written in conjunction with the young people, called “I Don't Like Mondays”.
Since May 2007 Matt has been working with Derby Playhouses’ Award Winning Youth Theatre as an associate practitioner. In this role he works as part of a dynamic team of professionals with extensive practical knowledge and skills, delivering workshops on performance skills.
Producing and devising short plays has become quite a big part of Matt’s work. Over the Half term in October 2007, Matt worked with 18 young people from Erewash to produce a play in a week around the theme of Halloween. Matt helped them form the play, develop the idea and then he wrote the short script for them to learn over night and rehearse the next day. Though challenging, the young people performed brilliantly, a testament to their hard word.
2007 has been a busy year for Matt as he also started to lecture fro Leicester College. Starting his work their just doing technical theatre, matt has gone on to deliver acting for stage and screen to learners on the Introductory Diploma, right through to the HND produced in conjunction with De Montford University.
